How to Combine Flooring in Your House

When it comes to home renovation, one of the most common questions homeowners have relates to combining flooring. There is a lot of debate about whether it’s appropriate to mix things up, or if you should stick with consistency throughout the interior of your home.

Most interior designers agree that a blend can be visually appealing and oftentimes easier to maintain, especially in high-traffic areas of your home. Some people like uniformity, but the more laidback and informal look of combination flooring has seen a rise in popularity in recent years.

While your aesthetic preferences and lifestyle will ultimately guide your choices, if you have chosen to take the leap and combine flooring, there are a few tips and tricks you can use to make sure everything looks flawless.

Consider the width. No two rooms are exactly alike, and you should coordinate the type of flooring in relation to the width—or lack thereof—of your space. In a long, narrow space like a hallway, lighter colors of hardwood typically create the illusion that there is more room. It also invites more warmth into the environment, brightening up the space and making you feel more positive.

Transition flooring. The bohemian effect of transitioning two different types of flooring, even if the patterns run in different directions, can be very interesting. However, it’s difficult to make it look seamless rather than patchy and awkward. Though plenty of interior designers advocate for combined hardwood, integrating dingy vinyl flooring and sleek herringbone will look less than ideal.

Choose gradient hues. The key to making two different types of flooring fade naturally into one another is to balance complementary or similar hues. Begin the transition with the lighter or darker color in an entryway and lay the flooring in increasingly less prominent shades in bigger rooms of the house.

With so many different varieties of flooring available, it can be challenging to tackle a home renovation project on your own. Learn more about the unique advantages of combining hardwood and reach out to a professional for a free in-home estimate.
