Floor Care &
Maintenance

Protect your investment. Expert tips to keep hardwood, vinyl, laminate, and wall paneling looking beautiful for decades.

Hardwood Flooring

Daily & Weekly

  • Sweep or dry-mop daily to remove grit that scratches the finish.
  • Vacuum weekly with a soft-brush attachment (no beater bar).
  • Wipe spills immediately with a dry or barely-damp cloth.

Monthly

  • Damp-mop with a microfiber pad and a hardwood-specific cleaner (Bona, Method, manufacturer-recommended).
  • Inspect felt pads under furniture legs and replace if worn.
  • Check humidity — aim for 35–55% to prevent gapping or cupping.

What to Avoid

  • Steam mops — they drive moisture into the seams and damage finishes.
  • Vinegar, ammonia, or bleach-based cleaners — they dull and degrade urethane finishes.
  • Oil-soap polishes — they leave residue that makes refinishing nearly impossible.
  • Walking in stilettos or cleats — they leave permanent dents.

Vinyl & LVP (Luxury Vinyl Plank)

Daily & Weekly

  • Sweep or vacuum (soft-brush) regularly — vinyl is more forgiving than hardwood but grit still scratches.
  • Wet-mop with warm water and a few drops of mild dish soap; LVP is 100% waterproof.
  • Wipe spills with any cloth — no urgency on most LVP, but address standing water within a few hours.

Monthly

  • Deep-clean with a manufacturer-approved vinyl cleaner.
  • Inspect seams for any lifting; click-lock joints should remain tight.
  • Refresh entrance mats — trapping grit at the door extends floor life dramatically.

What to Avoid

  • Abrasive scrubbers, steel wool, or strong solvents — they scratch the wear layer.
  • Wax, polish, or buffing products — modern LVP doesn't need them and they create cloudy buildup.
  • Rubber-backed mats in direct sunlight — the rubber can discolor vinyl over time.
  • Sliding heavy furniture — lift and place; use furniture sliders for moves.

Laminate Flooring

Daily & Weekly

  • Dry-sweep or vacuum (soft-brush) to remove abrasive debris.
  • Damp-mop with a barely-wrung microfiber pad — laminate handles moisture poorly at the seams.
  • Wipe spills immediately, especially near seams.

Monthly

  • Clean with a laminate-specific spray (Bona for laminate, Pergo Floor Cleaner, etc.).
  • Inspect for any swelling at seams — an early indicator of water intrusion.
  • Keep humidity stable; sudden swings cause edge-warping.

What to Avoid

  • Steam mops — the #1 cause of laminate seam failure.
  • Wet-mopping with standing water — laminate cores swell permanently.
  • Wax, polish, or refinishing — laminate finishes cannot be refinished.
  • Pet accidents left sitting — clean within minutes to avoid permanent damage.

Wall Paneling

Routine Care

  • Dust monthly with a microfiber cloth or feather duster.
  • For wood paneling, polish quarterly with a wood-safe cleaner (Murphy's Oil Soap diluted, or Bona wood polish).
  • Spot-clean fingerprints and smudges with a barely-damp microfiber.

Long-Term

  • Inspect annually for any panel separation, especially near doorframes and corners.
  • Maintain consistent humidity (35–55%) to prevent panel cupping.
  • Touch-up scratches with a matching wax pencil from the original manufacturer.

What to Avoid

  • Soaking with water — wood paneling absorbs and warps.
  • Direct sun without UV-filtering window film — causes uneven fading.
  • Hanging heavy items without proper anchors — panels are decorative, not structural.

Pet-Friendly Tips

  • Trim pet nails regularly — long claws scratch all floor types.
  • Place water bowls on a waterproof mat to catch splashes.
  • Clean accidents within minutes; enzymatic pet cleaners work best.
  • If you're choosing flooring for a pet-heavy household, LVP/SPC is the most forgiving.

Sun, Humidity & Seasonal Care

UV Protection

  • Use curtains, blinds, or UV-filtering window film to reduce direct sunlight on exposed flooring.
  • Rearrange rugs and furniture periodically so the floor ages evenly — uneven sun exposure creates visible "ghost lines."
  • Exotic species (Brazilian Cherry, Tigerwood) are especially photo-reactive — expect noticeable color change in the first 6–12 months.

Humidity Control

  • Run a humidifier in winter and a dehumidifier in summer to keep relative humidity between 35–55%.
  • Avoid placing flooring directly over floor vents without a protective deflector.
  • Acclimate new flooring 48–72 hours before installation in the room where it will live.
